The festivities of Diwali begin today with the celebration of Dhanteras. This celebration sees homes decorated and rangolis made at the entrance to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Dhanteras is also considered an extremely auspicious day for making new purchases, especially of gold or silver articles and new utensils as it is believed that the new ‘dhan’ (wealth) is a sign of good luck.
